Lesson 2 of 5
Niching as a Foundation Not a Ceiling
There's a version of niching that's about restriction — staying in a box, turning away work outside your lane. That's not what we're talking about.
Your niche is a foundation, not a ceiling. It's the starting point everything else is built on — your messaging, your offer, your gift asset, your positioning. Get it right and all of those become easier to build and easier to communicate. Skip it and everything downstream becomes harder than it needs to be.
Your niche is not a restriction on what you can do. It's a decision about who you're going to be unmistakably right for.
Think of it this way. A physiotherapist who works with anyone with a body has to market broadly and explain their value to every new person they meet. A physiotherapist who works specifically with marathon runners has a message that writes itself. Every runner who sees it knows immediately whether it's for them.
The marathon physio hasn't restricted what they can do. They've made a decision about who they want to be the obvious choice for. That decision does the marketing for them.
- A clear niche makes your message specific enough to resonate
- It tells the right people they've found what they were looking for
- It tells the wrong people to keep looking — which saves everyone time
- It gives your Canvas a brief to build from
You can always serve clients outside your niche. What you can't do is market effectively to everyone at once. The niche is about where you point your message — not about who you're allowed to help.
