Module 2 · Lesson 3

Finding Your Defendable Corner

A defendable corner is a position in your market that you can own — not because you've locked out competitors legally, but because you've staked a claim so specifically that no one else is saying quite the same thing to quite the same person in quite the same way.

It's called defendable because it's grounded in something real about you — your background, your method, your specific experience, your particular perspective. Generic positioning can be copied. Positioning built on something genuinely yours cannot.

The most powerful position in any market is one that only you can occupy — because it's built from who you actually are.

Finding your corner requires looking at two things simultaneously: what the people in your niche actually need, and what you bring that others in your category don't. The intersection of those two things is your corner.

Three dimensions to explore

Your method. Do you have a distinctive approach — a process, a framework, a philosophy — that produces results differently from the standard approach in your field?

Your experience. Have you been where your client is? Do you have first-hand experience of the problem — not just training in how to solve it?

Your specificity. Are you serving a more specific version of a broad category — a narrower niche, a more defined outcome, a more particular context?

You don't need all three. One strong dimension, clearly communicated, is enough to create a position that stands out. The Canvas will help you identify which dimension is strongest for you and build your positioning around it.
