Why Your Lead Magnet Probably Isn't Working

Most solopreneurs who have a lead magnet have the same problem: it's generic. A checklist. A free guide. A PDF with tips. Something that took a weekend to put together and has been sitting on a landing page attracting no one in particular.

The problem isn't the format. It's the brief. A generic lead magnet is built without a clear niche in mind — which means it speaks to a broad category of people rather than a specific person with a specific problem. And a broad message, as we covered in Module 1, connects with no one.

A lead magnet that tries to be useful to everyone ends up being essential to no one.

The second problem is relevance to the paid offer. A lead magnet that isn't connected to what you actually sell attracts people who will never become clients. They download the freebie, consume it, and move on — because there's no bridge between what you gave them for free and what you're offering them next.

The two tests every gift asset must pass

The niche test: Would your ideal client — the specific person you defined in Module 1 — look at this and think “this was made for someone exactly like me”?

The bridge test: Does this free offer demonstrate the thinking and approach behind your paid work — so someone who consumes it naturally wants more of the same?

If your current lead magnet fails either test, it's not a problem with your execution — it's a brief problem. The right brief produces the right asset. The Gift Asset questions in the Canvas are how you write that brief.
